Students at every level of ability are encouraged to join in music, drama and the arts. All gain confidence as they explore different areas of self-expression and some discover unsuspected talents. Although this may lead some to follow academic courses to GCSE and IB, extra-curricular involvement in all forms of performance is open to anyone. A number decide to maintain their creativity by studying a related course at university, art college or drama school.
All students study music within the curriculum throughout the junior school and up to Year 9. They are introduced to the basic principles Western musical styles as well as learning about the different musical traditions from around the world. Music is offered as an option at both GCSE and IB level.
The Music Department occupies an attractive, purpose built, suite of rooms in the main College Building. There are excellent practice rooms and the main teaching room is well equipped with both computers and a range of musical instruments. Students are able to use the practice rooms in their free time. The Music Director leads a team of peripatetic musicians at the College who teach more than 150 students individual music and singing lessons. Our pupils enjoy great success at examinations administered by the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall exam boards.

However, it is beyond the curriculum that the music of the school is truly felt. The College’s ensembles are many and eclectic, both choral and instrumental, catering for all levels of expertise in a range of musical genres and there are several opportunities for these groups to perform in front of audiences. In particular, there are two concerts per term; our short Twilight Concerts cater for our less experienced performers from across the school and are also used by our students to polish up their exam pieces. The Carol Service and the main concerts provide opportunities for the whole school community to observe and applaud our talented students and staff. There are other ad hoc events throughout the year and every other year, the school production is a musical bringing the quality of the West End to Scarborough College!
