I attended the 1st UK Surfing ‘grom squad’ girls training on the 9th/10th of March. We travelled through the night on the Friday and arrived on Saturday morning. I met up with Joel Gray my instructor and the six other girls to surf an over head high winter swell at Towan beach Newquay . The paddle out was tough but I managed to surf a few waves over the next couple of hours. We did gym training at the Cornwall high performance centre, exercises focused on balance and foot placement on the board.
Sunday was blown out with gale force winds. Conditions were very difficult due to storm Gareth bringing 18ft waves into St Ives Harbour so we concentrated on gym work and techniques.
I have been taught some really useful technical information to work on in the water in preparation for my next training session.
I’m really looking forward to the next UK girls squad training at Surf Snowdonia in May where we will surf the advanced wave and focus on technique specifics.
Hopefully we will then start to compete from this August onwards initially in Cornwall.
