Education outside the classroom plays an essential part in both developing the inter-personal skills of individuals and making them into interesting people. The Extra Curricular Programme (ECP), which operates outside of lesson times, is available to help pupils/students to develop a broad range of interests. The College ensures the opportunities available are wide-ranging but also the tutor is there to encourage the pupil/student have a balanced Extra-Curricular Programme.
The real benefit from some ECPs such as Duke of Edinburgh Award and the The Combined Cadet Force (CCF), are the holiday trips associated with them. Furthermore, there are other holiday trips such as language exchanges, which enhance students’ language skills.
The Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) scheme encompasses community service and outdoor pursuits with challenging expeditions, under the supervision of well-qualified staff. Scarborough College achieves one of the highest proportions of successful Gold awards in the area. A total of fifty Gold awards have been achieved in the last ten years, with fourteen Gold awards in the 2008-09 academic year. Although most of the expedition training is carried out in this country, in October 2009 there was a trip to Morocco and an expedition to Borneo was undertaken during July 2011.
The CCF has both an army and naval section and is one of ways sixth form students develop their leadership skills. With training at school during the week, the weekends and holidays provide the opportunity for cadets to put their skills and knowledge into practice. Cadets also have the option of attending residential courses at military bases.
