Curriculum

by-tb-86 Our primary aim is to challenge and develop the academic ability of each pupil. In small classes, staff can closely monitor academic progress and deliver an individually tailored programme of work so that each child is confidently working to their optimum capacity. Outstanding GCSE performance reinforces Scarborough College’s strong academic reputation and students regularly receive praise from examining bodies for their individual achievements, placing them at the top of their subject nationally.

The Senior School curriculum builds upon the breadth of subjects introduced throughout the Junior School with Years Seven to Nine offering the traditional disciplines of English, Mathematics, the three Sciences and Modern Foreign Languages alongside a well-structured development of both Humanities and the Arts. From September 2010 three languages will be studied in Year Seven to Nine and work in the classroom is enhanced by our successful exchange programmes with France, Germany and Spain, through which students can extend their language skills and experience different cultures.

Alongside the core subjects, every student takes at least one Foreign Language plus three other options from a range of subject choices that includes Geography, History, ICT, Business Studies, Art, Drama, Music and P.E. Our Learning Support department plays a pivotal role in sensitively addressing particular needs and challenges, with specialist teachers providing encouragement and assistance where needed.

The quest for excellence extends to our facilities. The College boasts an up to date, well-stocked library with a full time Librarian. This bright and attactrive facility offers a comfortably furnished reading area and more formal work stations. The Library incorporates a Higher Education and Careers room together with a computer suite with full internet access and the College’s network is available to students through the excellent computer facilities across the campus. In all subject areas, well equipped specialist rooms provide superb resources for pursuits such as photography, jewellery design, musical composition and scientific experimentation.

The breadth of curriculum is maintained throughout the College and is particularly evident in the Sixth Form where students study for the International Baccalaureate. The opportunity to study excitingly different subjects, such as a new language, Psychology or perhaps Environmental Systems, presents a fresh appeal and with it, a new way of learning. Core aspects of the IB, such as the Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, provide invaluable preparation for the self-discipline demanded both by universities and the workplace. Throughout the school support for Careers and Higher Education guidance is given by specialist staff and our dedicated Sixth Form Study Centre offers exceptional resources to the older students.
