Weaponness House

weaponness-house Weaponness House is a beautiful Victorian building on Filey Road, and the largest of our boarding houses. Ideally located, it is only five minutes walk from school, fifteen to the beach and twenty into the town centre. The other boarding house, Willersley, is very close by and students are encouraged to mix and socialise together.

There is a successful mix of international boarders in this friendly boarding house, who bring experiences from around the world, enhancing cross cultural links between students and making a strong sense of community.

The main house accommodates boys aged 13 to 19 years, with comfortable single and twin rooms with wash basins and study provision, and communal shower and toilet facilities. The annex of the building accommodates sixth form boys which all have separate bedrooms with study areas.

The house has 3 common rooms with ample comfortable seating, 2 pool tables, 3 widescreen TVs, a baby grand piano and a quiet study area with computer workstations and 2 well stocked kitchens for our hungry boys.

Wi-fi connection is available throughout the house and there are separate computer rooms with a printer for private study, although most students prefer to do their prep work in the comfort of their own rooms and many use their own laptops.

Suppers are provided in the house when prep time finishes at 8.00pmand the boys help themselves to a range of food.  The kitchen is always sstocked with bread, milk, cheeses, meats, fresh juices, cereaals,  spreads, etc so that they can make their own snacks, suppers and weekend breakfasts.

The boarders are happy to take an active role in the upkeep of their accommodation and have rotas for washing up and tidying. Living like this from a young age provides valuable life skills in sharing responsibility, negotiating with others and in living harmoniously, all of which are vital in preparing them for life at university in subsequent years.

The house is set in beautiful grounds with a large driveway and a sizable back garden, big enough for a good game of football and also equipped with a patio area, a greenhouse and surrounded by trees and shrubs. Be assured, the house is very safe as it is always well lit at night and has comprehensive CCTV all around and throughout the house, as well as doors and windows being alarmed at night.

Daily house meetings are a great chance to catch up with each other, give notices, and make suggestions and comments. A program of activities takes place each weekend; boarders are actively encouraged to take part in activities to broaden their social network and most importantly, have fun! Examples of activities are ice skating, cinema, bowling and other seasonal trips such as the Christmas shopping trip and the bonfire & fireworks display.

We encourage the students to be independent yet at the same time we want them to feel secure, looked after and part of a big family unit. The residential staff comprises two families who are on duty day and night, to conduct house meetings, provide food, and to generally look after the well being of the students, providing a ‘home from home’ environment.  Other members of academic staff provide relief on 2 nights a week as ‘duty’ houseparents.

We offer weekly and occasional boarding as well as permanent ‘termly’ boarding. If you would like to look round our boarding house to get a feel for it, please contact us to arrange a visit and an informal chat.
