The College Carol Service took place on Wednesday 14th December, in the beautiful setting of St Mary’s Church.
The service began with the choir singing ‘O come, O come Emmanuel’ before processing down the aisle of the candlelit church.
We listened to readings which told the Christmas story from the Old Testament prophecies to the birth of Christ, and the visits of the Shepherds and the Wise Men. We also heard seasonal poetry by Charles Causley and U A Fanthorpe. The readers ranged in age from Laura Ingham in Year 6 of the Junior School to Jess Houghton, the current Head of School. The final reading from St John’s Gospel was delivered by Mrs Nixon.
Interspersed between the readings were many congregational carols and items by the various school choirs, directed by Mrs Leeson. The Year 7 Choir sang a beautiful rendition of ‘Silent Night’, and later, ‘Starlight’ by Giles Swayne. The Senior Choir provided ‘This is the Truth Sent from Above’ by Vaughan Williams and ‘Jesus Child’ by John Rutter. The Staff Choir also contributed the ‘Carol of the Bells’ by Mykola Leontovych.
