A solid start to the crucial Daily Mail Vase fifth round match against Queen Ethelburga’s College saw College up 12-0 in the first ten minutes. The 1st XV then sustained huge amounts of pressure culminating in Queen Ethelburga’s scoring with the last play of the half, leaving it 12-5 at the break.
QE began the second half in the same vein, quickly scoring again to narrow the margin to 12-10. College then gained the upper hand with two quick converted tries, widening the gap to 26-10. QE responded with ten minutes to go, scoring two tries, one of which was converted. At 26-22, with QE within one score, tension was high in the closing minutes until Sam Emmerson settled the nerves, crashing over with the last play of the match to seal the victory at 31-22.
