Coached for Success

scarborough-college-coached-for-success-2 A Scarborough College Junior School pupil has won a competition  organised by Plaxton Limited, as part of Scarborough Engineering Week.

Sarah Daoud worked out the value of five different parts that fit a  coach or bus at the event held at Scarborough Spa in October. The true value of the parts was £480 and Sarah worked out their value to  be £500.

Amongst the items were a plastic fuel filler, a printed circuit board, wiring, a led headlight and a seat pocket used to fix seats to the floor of a coach or bus. The seat pocket looked fairly plain, but as a patented design, was the most expensive item on display.

Kevin Winter, Team Leader of Coach Engineering at Plaxton, presented  Sarah with a 2007 centenary limited edition set of model vehicles.

He said “Children were given a little bit of help by encouraging them to try and relate the items on display to things they had at home to establish their value. We had a lot of entries, with wildly varying valuations and there was one other joint winner who was an adult.  I  am impressed that Sarah managed to get so close to the value of the components.

Dan Davey, Head of Scarborough College Junior School said;  “I was delighted to be invited to the engineering event at the Spa, making industry accessible to children is an important part of the wider educational process. The business community in Scarborough is clearly  vibrant and supportive and for one of our children to win a prize was thrilling. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience – a  valuable trip out of school. Many thanks to all those involved, especially Plaxton Coach Builders.”
